On March 16, 2009 Al Di Meola and the New World Sinfonia played in Die Fabrik in Hamburg.

I like fusion a lot and I’ve been a fan of Al’s for over 20 years, so of course I went to see him.  However since about 1985 Al’s been playing less jazz-rock and almost exclusively world music, so during the concert I was continuously swaying between exhilaration and trying to connect with the music.

Al was accompanied by Peo Alfonsi (another virtuoso on the acoustic guitar),

Fausto Beccalossi on accordion (emotionally very involved with the music),

Gumbi Ortiz (percussion), Peter Kaszas (drums), and Victor Miranda (bass). Unfortunately I did not have a good position, and I could not get good photos of the last three musicians.

The concert ended with Mediterranean Sundance, one of my all-time favorite pieces of music, and Al and the New World Sinfonia did a fantastic job on it!

For those who don’t know Mediterranean Sundance, take a look here, a performance from 28 years ago. :) A more modern rendition, very close to what I saw on Mon, can be seen here.
