Pillars (Palais de Longchamp, Marseille)

7 09 2007

Here is my first serious attempt at black-and-white. I carefully processed this image from my recent trip to Marseille in Camera Raw in order to preserve as much detail as possible in the shadows and the highlights. In Photoshop I straightened the vertical lines, converted to black-and-white and applied curves four times (masking out different areas) in order to tame down the contrast in the light pavement, dark ceiling and light pillar-bases. Finally I gave the image an ever so slight sepia tone.

Excellent work – at a glance it seems like this would be a more difficult image to work with, it has such a large scale of black to white. The ever so slight sepia adds to the image as well I believe, combined the two elements give the image an almost surrealistic feel.
